By now you have all seen all the videos of friends, coworkers, even celebrities dumping ice cold water over themselves. I bet you know why they’re doing this. That’s right, it’s to raise money and awareness for ALS. What an incredible marketing scheme.
EVERYONE now knows about ALS and that it is a disease that kills people. ALS attacks nerve cells and ultimately leads to total paralysis but the mind is never affected. Life expectancy after the diagnosis is 2-5 years. The exact cause is not understood and there is no cure or treatment that stops or even reverses the disease. Since the ice bucket challenge, the organization for ALS has raised more than double in donations since last year. Between July 29th to August 14th, $7.6 million has been raised with an additional $10 in just 2 days following that week. I think that charity organizations are going to have to look at the way they do fundraising in the future. This has started a phenomenon that doesn’t seem to be slowing down just yet.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m addicted. I have watched so many videos and they haven’t gotten old yet. Some of my favorites have been George W. Bush, Ben Affleck, Anna Wintour, AFLAC CEO, my dad’s, my BF Katie Beaudin and my manager Haley Lyman. One of the things that intrigues me is everyone making a complete fool of themselves and gladly so. People you wouldn’t expect are posting videos of themselves drenched. Also, the celebrity call outs are my favorite. I want to see who they are calling out and if they do it. I may have called out my husband and yet to have seen ice dripping down his washboard abs. (Yes I just called you out)
I also like to see the children getting involved. They have been the toughest out of everyone. They sit there and take it like champs. I love the ones where the kids are SO excited that they want to do it again. Overall, this is the best thing in social media right now and it’s POSITIVE. Go ahead, have fun with it, but remember the point is to raise not only awareness, but money. Without it, we can’t find a cure and someone very close to you, if not yourself, may end up with this terrible disease. I also posted a link for your viewing pleasure of all the ALS fails. Enjoy!
